Ferrari mechanic Francesco Cigarini gets injured

Francesco Cigarini injured

He fractured his tibia and fibula after a dramatic pit-lane incident on lap 36

Here is a video of the Ferrari mechanic Francesco Cigarini getting run over by Kimi Raikkonen. During the unsafe release at the Bahrain Grand Prix Cigarini was hit by Kimi Raikkonen’s car as the Finn pulled away. Francesco Cigarini required surgery after sustaining a fractured shinbone and fibula.

Francesco Cigarini’s leg was left broken after being struck by the left wheel on Kimi Raikkonen’s car. The sickening incident overshadowed the BahrainGP. Francesco Cigarini was keen to thank well-wishers for their messages of support.

“Surgery OK,”Francesco Cigarini said on Instagram. “I have to thank all the people worried about me, nothing else bit big hugs”

Only three of Raikkonen’s tyres had been replaced when he was given the green light to leave the pit-stop.

Surgery ok. I have to thank all the people worried for me. Nothing else, just a big thanks. Hugs! L'operazione è andata bene. Voglio ringraziare tutte le persone che hanno chiesto di me e si sono preoccupate. Solo un grande GRAZIE. Abbracci #thanks #grazie

Ferrari fined

Francesco Cigarini was holding the new wheel and was in the danger zone as the Kimi sped off. Raikkonen was told to come to a stop in the pit lane because the cars are not allowed to the track with different compound tyres fitted.

As a result, Ferrari was issued with a €50,000 fine after race stewards had reviewed the footage of the incident. Raikkonen blamed the lights for Cigarini’s injury.

“I don’t know what shape he is in. For sure, not great for him,” he added.

WARNING DISTRESSING CONTENT

Thankfully Cigarini is fully on the mend now and has released a video of him walking after his emergency surgery. Questions were asked about Kimi’s attitude to the incident as he didn’t appear to be too concerned shortly after.

We all hope that Cigarini has a speedy recovery and that we will see him in the pit lane working on the Ferrari again soon.
